PRODUCT & PACKAGING
Overproduction is a serious problem regardless of whether the material used in the product is sustainable or not. According to United States Environmental Protection Agency, around 11.9 million tons of clothing and footwear were produced in 2015 in the United States alone with around 8.2 million of it ended up in landfill. Furthermore, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (source from Fashion Revolution), around 3% of retail stock is overstock which means it will be incinerated or sent to landfill.
We produce small collections in small batches because as a vegan brand, we care not only about animal welfare but also the environment, and therefore we are committed to reasonable and responsible production. Even though the production cost is higher when producing in smaller batches, it is healthier for the fashion industry and for the sustainability of our world.
Majority of fashion items including clothing, handbags and jewellery are individually packed in clear plastic bags after production to protect them from getting dirty or damaged during shipment from the manufacturer to the retail store or warehouse. Some structured items such as handbags are also stuffed with plastic air bubble cushion to keep them in shape. These non-recyclable and non-biodegradable plastic packaging items usually just get thrown away and not re-used.
We were horrified by the amount of plastic packaging used to transport products from once place to another so we decided to do something about it - We work strictly with our manufacturer to ensure that our products are packed in our cotton dust bags only and that only paper stuffing is used when necessary.
We started off with PVC and PU faux leather, however, after we realised how harmful PVC is for the environment we gradually removed it from our products and also reduced the use of PU. We then started exploring another leather alternative - cork, a renewable and eco-friendly material, and can be obtained through a sustainable harvesting process.
In May 2018 we started the development of our first cork collection of handbags, purses and small handmade items, and it was then introduced to our store in October 2018.
In 2019 we have been focusing on mainly on using cork. Furthermore, we will switch from synthetic materials to using 100% cotton for our bag linings, and we will continue to explore more eco-friendly and sustainable leather alternatives.
In 2019 we have partnered up with a manufacturer that has passed the AI ethical audit and Sedex SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit), based in Guangzhou city. We are proud that our products are produced ethically by this experienced manufacturer who cares about quality and ethics as much as we do.
All our handmade products are now made locally in Hong Kong.
All our products are protected with a dust bag. From January 2019 our dust bags will be made from 100% cotton instead of synthetic materials.
All orders are shipped in cardboard boxes or padded envelopes. We try our best to avoid the use of plastic in our packaging as much as possible and we also encourage all our customers to double check all details of products (materials, colour, measurements etc) before making a purchase to avoid wasting resources from packaging and carbon emissions from delivery transportations.
